Zoo Lights - 6:47 p.m. - Oakland, Calif. Usually every year in the middle of the holidays I pack up the kids and head out to the Oakland Zoo for the annual zoo lights celebration. This year the outing seemed more challenging than usual. The 4-year-old was upset because she wanted dinner at home for some reason. The other two were on the edge of tears - probably brought on by a lack of routine and an abundance of sugar Santa left in their stockings. As the night seemed to be spinning out of control I grabbed hold of my camera and shot this image of lights in the trees. Its not much of a moment per say but I enjoy the image because it was the first thing I was able to control all evening. Camera settings: Canon Canon G11, ISO 80, 1 sec., f4.5, 35mm lens

Deep in Thought - 8 p.m. - San Francisco. This photo of Deanna Winston of Oakland was just a little too quiet for the New Year's Eve coverage...she was actually looking a several other 2011 glasses but it just was too subdued...but I really liked it for the hair things that glowed orange. 20,000 Leagues... - 9 a.m. - San Francisco. While looking for New Year's Eve festivities, I was drawn to these two elevators at the Hyatt Regency as they ascended. They reminded me of something Jules Verne might have dreamed up in Victorian times for underwater exploration, and the lights reminded me of bubbles. Behind the Orange Curtain - 11:23 a.m. - Oakland. A young girl parted the plastic slats of an orange-colored curtain, which marked the exit of an exhibit, while I was at the Chabot Space and Science Center to watch balloons drop from the top floor for New Year's Eve. Camera settings: Canon EOS-1D MkIV, ISO 1600, 1/125, f3.2, 24mm.
Zuckerberg - 12 p.m. - Palo Alto. I had to wait for a bit but finally Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook Groups product manager Justin Shaffer moved into the right angle to be caught reflected in a laptop at the end of a press conference at Facebook. Father/daughter outing - 1 p.m. - San Mateo. Six-year-old Ashley Robles shares her lunch with a pair of hungry ducks next to San Mateo Creek while enjoying an outing in Gateway Park with her father, Salvador Robles. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 200, 1/500, f5.6, 125mm
Football - 1:01 p.m. - San Francisco. Jett Ferro, (top) and Matthew Leisegang take advantage of the dry weather and get in a little soccer practice at Hallidie Plaza. The two are from Los Angeles and are visiting the Bay Area over the holidays. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 800, 1/1000, f4, 50mm lens.
Ringing In The Nude Year - 6 p.m. - San Francisco. I was desperately looking for any kind of photo for an early deadline on New Year's Eve, and knowing I only had until 7 p.m., I hustled over to the gathering of Critical Mass at Justin Herman Plaza where these two cyclists decided to ride au naturel for the last ride of the year. Short of the hat, it didn't work for a New Year's photo. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 2500, 1/12, f3.2, 35 mm lens
